How to measure hexagon tile

Hex tile is sold by a single size, like "2 inch hexagon," but brands don't agree on what that number means. Some measure flat-to-flat (between two opposite straight edges) and some measure point-to-point (between two opposite corners). The point-to-point measurement is about 15% larger.

This calculator uses the flat-to-flat width. Measure a tile with a tape or ruler across two parallel sides and enter that number, rather than relying on the size on the box.

How much grout hex tile needs

A regular hexagon needs about the same amount of grout as a square tile of the same width: a 2" hexagon uses roughly as much as a 2×2" square. What really drives grout quantity is tile size. Small hex mosaics have many more joints per square foot than large hexagons, so they need several times as much grout.

Grout needed per 100 sq ft, before overage. Sizes are flat-to-flat.

6" hexagon3/8"1/8"13.6 lbs11.2 lbs
8" hexagon3/8"3/16"15.3 lbs12.6 lbs

Two things move the number the most. Joint width is linear, so doubling the joint from 1/16" to 1/8" doubles the grout. Tile size works the other way: halving the hexagon size roughly doubles the grout.

Sanded or unsanded for hex tile?

Small hex mosaics are usually set with tight joints of 1/16" to 1/8", which typically call for unsanded grout. Larger hexagons with joints of 1/8" or wider generally use sanded grout. The calculator recommends one based on the joint width you pick. See sanded vs. unsanded grout for the details.

Tips for grouting hexagon mosaics

  • Mesh-backed hex sheets have joints built in. Use the joint width between tiles on the sheet, and match it between sheets so the seams disappear.
  • Work in small sections. Mosaics have a lot of joint surface, and grout can start setting before you finish cleaning a large area.
  • Buy at least 10% extra. Mosaics lose more grout to the sponge during cleanup than large tile does.
